By taking steps to reduce external and internal distractions, listeners increase their ability to grasp the essence of what is being said.

In short, active listening requires considerable internal activity coupled with external signals of calm receptivity — like a duck moving upriver that appears serene but whose feet are paddling furiously underwater. Fortunately, investing energy in active listening provides ample rewards. Active listening contributes to quality healthcare as well as to satisfying and positive interprofessional relationships (Gilbert, Ussher, Perz, Hobbs, & Kirsten, 2010; Warshawsky, Havens, & Knafl, 2012). When listeners convey empathy and respect, speakers are empowered to state more clearly their own needs and concerns. Active listening leads to learning — the listener will be changed in some way by the message received (Ludden, 2002).
